Liberia: Ex-soccer star takes lead in Senate race

MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — Early results for Liberia’s most high-profile Senate race give former soccer star George Weah a commanding lead over rival Robert Sirleaf, the president’s son.

Jerome Korkoya, chairman of the National Elections Commission, said Monday evening that results from Saturday’s election had been tallied from 1,636 of 4,701 polling places across the country.

Originally scheduled for October, the election was delayed twice because of concerns about Ebola. Critics had questioned whether the poll could be conducted safely and credibly.

There were 139 candidates running for 15 seats. Korkoya said turnout was 27.9 percent.

Weah, FIFA’s Player of the Year in 1995, had so far received 79.7 percent of the votes to represent Monrovia’s Montserrado County. Sirleaf was running in a distant second in the 11-candidate race with 11.2 percent.
