NEW DELHI, Sept. 7 (UPI) — At least 28 people, many agricultural workers in fields, were killed by lightning as storms lashed southern and eastern India Sunday
The southern state of Andhra Pradesh was the hardest hit by the monsoons, with 19 dead, said J.V. Ramudu, a senior police official. It is the first time in recent history so many have been killed by lightning in a single day.
“The number of lives lost seems to be very high compared to previous storms,” said M. Sanjay, another senior police official in the state.
Cricket players in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh narrowly escaped being hit by a falling tree that was in flames after being struck by lightning.
“It was a miraculous escape for our players as well as the staff,” Guntur District Cricket Association official Seethapathi told the Times of India.
