BETHESDA, Md., July 20 (UPI) — Aerospace company Lockheed Martin Corp. is expected Monday to announce its $9 billion purchase of the United Technologies Corp. unit Sikorsky Aircraft.
The deal by Lockheed Martin, the world’s largest defense contractor, would be the largest aerospace acquisition since 2012, when United Technologies purchased Goodrich Corp. for $16 billion. Sikorsky would join the Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training division.
Sikorsky, based in Stratford, Conn., and Lockheed Martin, headquartered in Bethesda, Md., are partners in a number of defense programs, including the VH-92 Presidential Helicopter, Combat Rescue Helicopter and the Naval MH-60 Helicopter.
The acquisition is subject to U.S. regulatory approval.
“Sikorsky is a natural fit for Lockheed Martin and complements our broad portfolio of world-class aerospace and defense products and technologies,” Marillyn Hewson, Lockheed Martin CEO, said in a statement. “I’m confident this acquisition will help us extend our core business into the growing areas of helicopter production and sustainment.”
