LONDON, Aug. 20 (UPI) — The world’s first suspended swimming pool is being built in London near the U.S. Embassy.
The pool, dubbed a “sky pool” because of its 10-story suspension, will join two neighboring residential buildings in London’s Nine Elms neighborhood, the pool’s designers say.
The architectural feat will measure 90 feet long by 19 feet wide, is planned to be 10 feet deep and enveloped by strong, 8-inch glass. Sean Mulryan, founder of the pool’s developer Ballymore, is reported to be behind the “floating” structure.
“We set out to create places and spaces that are more than just bricks and mortar,” Mulryan said. “The pool is testimony to this philosophy and gives the development a unique character.”
Residents of Embassy Gardens will be able to swim (or walk) across empty space between rooftops, according to the plans. Prices of the apartments and penthouses including the unique amenity start at about $942,000, The Verge reports.
“My vision for the sky pool stemmed from a desire to push the boundaries in the capability of construction and engineering. I wanted to do something that had never been done before,” Mulryan said.
“The experience of the pool will be truly unique, it will feel like floating through the air in central London.”
Ballymore’s structural feat may be the first to join two buildings over a busy central London street with water, but it isn’t the first project to experiment with pools.
Designers in India reportedly plan to provide an apartment building which replaces balconies with acrylic-lined pools. A hotel in Singapore wows guests with an existing infinity pool on the building’s 57th floor.
