Louisiana police officer, civilian dead, two others injured

SUNSET, La., Aug. 26 (UPI) — A Louisiana man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly killing a woman and a police officer, and stabbing two other people, local authorities said.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz told the Advocate in Baton Rouge, Sunset, La. police Officer Henry Nelson, 51, was fatally shot when he responded to a call Wednesday afternoon about a domestic disturbance in which three people were stabbed. One of the stabbing victims, 40-year-old Shameka Johnson, also died.

After allegedly shooting the officer, the suspect, 35-year-old Harrison Lee Riley, Jr., drove a vehicle into a nearby gas station, where he reportedly holed up with three customers inside. Guidroz said the people were able to escape the building safely and despite earlier reports, there were no hostages.

He said law enforcement attempted to use tear gas to get Riley out of the gas station.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen,” Guidroz said earlier in the evening before Riley was detained. “We are not going to stay here all night and beg him to come out.”

CNN reported the suspect sustained irritation to his eyes, possibly from the tear gas. He was transported to a Lafayette hospital for treatment.

Louisiana State Police spokesman Sgt. James Anderson said the officer was transported by air to the hospital for treatment. The condition of the three victims was not immediately clear.

Sources told KPLC in Lake Charles, La., there are multiple ambulances and helicopters in the area because there may be “multiple scenes.”
