Lupita Nyong’o’s mysterious ‘Star Wars’ character revealed

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 13 (UPI) — Director J.J. Abrams has revealed the nature of actress Lupita Nyong’o’s character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Nyong’o will appear as motion capture character Maz Kanata, who harbors special abilities through the use of her eyes. Kanata can be seem on the official poster for the upcoming Star Wars installment.

“Her eyes are an important aspect of her character,” Abrams said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “And you’ll see how it plays out.”

The mysterious character is also heard narrating the film’s latest TV spot saying “I have lived long enough to see the same eyes in different people. I see your eyes. I know your eyes.”

Nyong’o is reportedly grateful for the role because of the emphasis put on her eyes. “As an actor for films, your eyes are a lot of the way you communicate anyway,” she said to EW. “So it was definitely a gift to have that be the means to [Kanata’s] magic.”

Nyong’o was first pegged for a lead role in Force Awakens last June. Lucasfilm announced the Oscar winner joined actress Gwendoline Christie in becoming part of the highly anticipated film’s cast.

“It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape,” president Kathleen Kennedy said at the time. Nyong’o and Christie appear alongside Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Adam Driver, Peter Mayhew, John Boyega and more in the upcoming action movie.

Star Wars: Force Awakens opens in theaters Dec. 18.
