Mail-eating monkey swings from street sign, pulls molding from police car

SANFORD, Fla., Sept. 29 (UPI) — Florida police said officers responding to a report of a monkey raiding a resident’s mailbox for papery snacks used a bottle of water to “distract” the simian.

The Sanford Police Department said in a Facebook post officers responded to a resident’s home in the Hidden Lakes subdivision shortly after 8 a.m. Monday on a report of a monkey sitting atop a resident’s mailbox and eating their letters.

Officers arrived to find the monkey climbing on a street sign and swinging it back and forth.

The Facebook post said the monkey then “decided to pull off the molding from one of our patrol cars.”

Police said they were able to “distract” the monkey, later identified as a pet named Zeek, with a plastic water bottle.

Zeek was released into the custody of his owner.
