AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The furor over Maine Gov. Paul LePage’s comment about “young white” girls being impregnated by out-of-state drug dealers is so last week. This week, the Republican governor has another distraction — potential impeachment.
The Maine House could debate an impeachment order targeting him for using his influence to get House Speaker Mark Eves fired from a job.
A group of lawmakers led by Rep. Ben Chipman of Portland has submitted the order, which Chipman says will be debated Thursday.
Impeachment would be unprecedented in Maine, but it remains to be seen what will happen. There’s also been talk of a proposal to censure the governor. Rep. Sara Gideon, assistant Democratic leader, says “anything can happen” between now and Thursday.
