ANTIOCH, Tenn., Aug. 5 (UPI) — Police responding to reports of a shots fired at an Antioch, Tenn., movie theater shot and killed a suspect Wednesday, law enforcement officials said.
Police said the suspect, a 29-year-old man, was armed with a hatchet and firearm when he entered the Carmike Hickory 8 Theater around 1 p.m. local time. He also allegedly brought in a backpack found to contain a “hoax device,” officials said.
Don Aaron, a spokesman for Metro Nashville police told reporters one person in the theater was injured by the hatchet, a man who identified himself only as Steven to NBC News.
Steven and two women were also sprayed by a substance that appeared to be pepper spray. Steven said he had no idea why the suspect attacked him and his family, but he called for prayers for the man’s family.
“I’m very, very grateful that no one else got injured here today other than the person who perpetrated this,” he said.
Aaron said one officer entered the theater, which was screening Mad Max: Fury Road, and was allegedly fired upon by the suspect. A SWAT team then came into the theater, where there was an exchange of fire.
Around 2 p.m. police said the suspect was dead.
Police found a second backpack near the back of the theater and were investigating its contents.
The incident comes two weeks after a man opened fire at a movie theater in Lafayette, La., killing two people and himself.
