Man wounded, campus locked down after shooting at Georgia university

SAVANNAH, Ga., Aug. 28 (UPI) — A man was wounded by gunfire at a Georgia college late Thursday night, when an argument supposedly turned violent on campus.

The shooting was reported at Savannah State University in Savannah, school officials said. According to witnesses, a fight broke out in the student union building and one of the students pulled a gun.

Those witnesses said the victim was shot in the collarbone area — and that bystanders applied pressure to the gunshot wound until paramedics arrived.

Neither the victim nor the suspect was immediately identified.

The university briefly imposed a lockdown on the campus, which lasted between about 11 p.m. to midnight. The school posted a lockdown message on its Facebook page and sent emails to students, warning them to stay indoors.

“Campus lockdown is over. Investigation is ongoing. Anyone with info about the incident should contact campus police,” the school’s post read.

Police continue to search for the gunman. The condition of the wounded man wasn’t initially known.
