Marine found dead at California’s Camp Pendleton

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif., Oct. 6 (UPI) — Military officials were investigating the death of a Marine found dead at a shooting range at California’s Camp Pendleton.

Assigned to the 1st Marine Division, the unidentified Marine was found at 6 a.m. Monday at Marksmanship Training Range 214 with a gunshot injury to the head.

Division public affairs officer Lt. Colleen McFadden confirmed the Marine’s death to The Press Enterprise in Riverside, Calif.

Camp Pendleton Federal Fire Department responded to the scene and said they could not determine how the Marine was shot.

Officials at the Marine Corps base told the Los Angeles Times the Marine was part of a training exercise using live ammunition. They confirmed no other Marines were injured during the incident.

The Marine’s identity was being withheld until 24 hours after his family had been notified of his death.

McFadden said caring for the Marine’s family and unit friends is the “priority.”
