LOS ANGELES, Sept. 1 (UPI) — Mark Ruffalo has taken to social media to address fans upset at the casting of Matt Bomer as a transgender character in the upcoming film Anything.

“To the Trans community. I hear you. It’s wrenching to you see you in this pain. I am glad we are having this conversation. It’s time,” Ruffalo, an executive producer of the film, wrote Wednesday on Twitter.

“In all honesty I suggested Matt for the role after the profound experience I had with him while making The Normal Heart,” he continued.

Ruffalo’s response comes after fans and members of the LGBT community expressed their disappointment that Bomer would be taking on the role instead of a real trans woman.

“The movie is already shot and Matt poured his heart and soul into this part. Please have a little compassion. We are all learning,” Ruffalo wrote responding to a fan who suggested Bomer be recast.

Bomer has yet to respond to the controversy.

Anything, directed by Timothy McNeil, will feature Bomer’s character befriending a suicidal man who moves from Mississippi to Los Angeles after his wife’s death. The film currently has no release date.
