MARKSVILLE, La., Dec. 11 (UPI) — A Louisiana grand jury indicted two deputy marshals on Thursday for the killing of a six-year-old autistic boy and the critical wounding of his father last month.
The Marksville city deputy marshals, Norris Greenhouse Jr. and Derrick Stafford, were charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. The two fired at least 18 shots at the car of Chris Few and killed his son, Jeremy Mardis, buckled into the front seat next to him on Nov. 3.
Stafford, 32, and Greenhouse, 23, were arrested in November but not charged until Thursday.
“I want Stafford and Greenhouse Jr. to get what they deserve. I want justice,” said Jeremy’s grandmother, Cathy Mardis. She said the weeks since the shooting have been “pure hell.”
The deputies said they were trying to arrest Few, 25, on a warrant when he fled. No existing warrant was found and Few was not armed.
The witness to the incident is Marksville Police Sgt. Kenneth Parnell III and the video from his body camera. Superintendent of Louisiana State police Col. Mike Edmonson called the video “one of the most disturbing videos I’ve ever seen.”
“It troubled me as a police officer and as a father,” Edmonson said “There’s no reason that boy deserved to die like that.”
Few’s attorney as well as the police report said the video shows Few with his hands in the air when the two deputies opened fire.
