SEATTLE, April 12 (UPI) — Former teacher Mary Kay Letourneau Fualaau says she and her husband Vili Fualaau, who was in middle school when they first started having sex, haven’t directly discussed with their daughters how their relationship began.
“There was never a sit-down chat, ‘Now is the time we’re going to talk to our children about this,’” Mary Kay said in an interview with ABC News 20/20 this weekend. “They seemed to already know … because they grew up with it. … There’s just never been a, ‘Wow, we better explain.’”
Vili was only 13 when he began having sex with his then-married, 34-year-old teacher, who was also a mother of four children. Letourneau’s husband found out about the relationship, contacted police and Mary Kay was arrested.
She ultimately entered into a plea agreement on child rape charges and served 7 1/2 years in prison. Upon her release, she and Vili resumed their controversial romance and, by then, he was legally an adult.
Now 31 and 53 respectively, Vili and Mary Kay are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary as their daughters Audrey and Georgia attend school in the same district where their mother taught and their father was a student.
Vili recalled what it was like to be the teen father of two young girls.
“It was a huge change in my life, for sure,” he told interviewer Barbara Walters. “I don’t feel like I had the right support, the right help behind me … from my family, from anyone, in general. I mean, my friends couldn’t help me because they had no idea what it was like to be a parent. I mean, because we were all 14, 15.”
Mary Kay defended the relationship, regardless of how it began.
“If it wasn’t strong enough in the beginning, it wouldn’t have carried through those years,” she said.
