Washington (AFP) – World number three Rory McIlroy confirmed Wednesday he’ll skip the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth as he tries to stay fresh in a busy season that includes both the Olympics and Ryder Cup.
Speaking on his 27th birthday, and on the eve of his title defence at the US PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, McIlroy outlined an upcoming schedule that doesn’t include the European Tour’s flagship event May 26-29.
“The reason that I took three weeks off after Augusta was I’m not going to have more than a week off until after the Ryder Cup,” McIlroy said.
“I’m playing here, next week at The Players, the Irish Open, then I’ll take a week off.
“Then it’s basically week-on, week-off from there,” said McIlroy, who will play the USPGA Memorial hosted by Jack Nicklaus in Ohio prior to a week off before the US Open at Oakmont in Pennsylvania.
“You can’t play every week,” McIlroy said. “You want to feel as fresh as you can for every tournament you play.”
McIlroy will take a week off after the US Open then play in the European Tour’s French Open, opting out of the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Championship in Akron, Ohio.
