MANILA, Nov. 19 (UPI) — Russia could suspend airline flights to and from other countries — extending a ban already in place on travel to Egypt — because of terrorist threats, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Thursday.
Flights from Russia to Egypt were suspended Nov. 6, after a Russian plane crashed on its way from Sharm El-Shiekh, Egypt to St. Petersburg, Russia a week earlier.
Officials believe a bomb on board Metrojet Flight 9268 caused the crash, which killed 244 passengers and crew. Days later Rosaviation, Russia’s aircraft regulatory agency, banned flights of the airline EgyptAir to Russia.
“I cannot exclude that we may consider this issue in some cases, I mean the issue concerning flights to other countries,” Medvedev said from Manila. “But this hasn’t been done yet and I hope it won’t happen.”
The ban on Egyptian flights will remain in place until Egypt demonstrates it has taken steps to ensure passenger safety, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
