Meghan Trainor reveals inspiration for new song ‘Lead Me On’

BURBANK, Calif., Oct. 15 (UPI) — Meghan Trainor shyly opened up about a romantic experience with a man whom she met online and ultimately inspired her latest song, “Lead Me On.”

While appearing on Wednesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show to recount her hiatus from the spotlight after vocal chord surgery and perform on TV for the first time since, the “All About That Bass” singer admitted the potential relationship ended up to be “nothing.”

“But I did get a great song out of it. I wrote a smash out of it,” she said, later revealing the song’s title.

While on vocal rest after hemorrhaging caused her to need surgery, Trainor spent several weeks depending on technology to communicate. Social media became her primary mode of communication with her fans, who she calls “Megatrons,” and ultimately became the place where she met the mystery man.

“It was really sweet,” Trainor revealed of “Lead Me On,” which chronicles her experience with unrequited romance. “He said like, ‘I never intended to lead you on.’ So, that was like, the main hook.”

Later on the show, Trainor took to the stage with duet partner John Legend to perform their “Like I’m Gonna Lose You,” marking the 21-year-old star’s first live performance since her surgery.
