SEWARD, Neb., Dec. 2 (UPI) — Law enforcement officials in Nebraska announced Friday they arrested an alleged member of Mexico’s Sinaloa drug cartel who has been on the run for four years.
Seward County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jesus Ramon Buena-Peregina during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 on Wednesday near the town of Seward, about 70 miles southwest of Omaha.
Buena-Peregina, who’s been wanted on drug trafficking charges, was deported once already but officials said he returned to import cocaine.
Investigators said Buena-Peregina was a lieutenant in the Sinaloa cartel, the Mexican drug group formerly run by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
A 27-year-old woman found with Buena-Peregina during the stop was also arrested and charged with being an accessory to a felony.
A passport and identification card the fugitive had at the time of the traffic stop were phony, officials said.
U.S. Marshals were called by the Seward County Sheriff’s Office to process the federal warrant.
