DAVIE, Fla., Jan. 13 (UPI) — After losing its defensive coordinator to the Denver Broncos, the Miami Dolphins weren’t about to let its offensive line coach walk away.
That’s why the team blocked the Los Angeles Rams’ request to interview offensive line coach Chris Foerster, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media.
NFL teams are allowed to block assistant coaches from interviewing with other teams for positions, other than head coach. First-year coach Adam Gase brought Foerster onto his staff when he arrived in Miami. Foerster also coached the offensive line from 2010 to 2014 with the Washington Redskins.
Sean McVay, who was hired Thursday to be the Rams’ new head coach, asked permission for the interview. McVay and Foerster coached together for the Redskins from 2011 to 2014. Foerster, 55, began his NFL coaching career in 1992 as an offensive line coach for the Minnesota Vikings. He had the same role for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001. He spent two years coaching tight ends with the Indianapolis Colts before becoming the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator in 2004. Foerster then coached the offensive line for the Baltimore Ravens, before coaching for the San Francisco 49ers and Redskins.
