MLive.com discovered the violations through a Freedom of Information request.
The Level III violations were reported on April 13 and include “improperly discussing a recruit before he had been admitted, providing a helmet and jersey for a fundraiser to benefit a high school scholarship fund, sharing recruiting materials through social media, and allowing a recruit to sit in premium seating at a campus hockey game,” according to the {link:Detroit Free Press.: “http://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2015/05/12/michigan-secondary-violations-jim-harbaugh/27154627/”,nw, t: “Detroit Free Press on violations”}
“Members of the coaching staff were visiting with a prospect during an unplanned unoffical visit the prospect made to the institution,” {link:the report reads: “https://www.scribd.com/doc/265015614/University-of-Michigan-Level-III-violations-report”,nw, t: “Report on violations”} about the fourth violation. “The head coach was scheduled to make a promotional appearance at the conclusion of the second period of the hockey game. … The head coach made his promotional appearance and then the group went up to the seats that the head coach had used on prior occasions when attending games with his family. Being newly hired, it did not occur to the football staff that the area was considered premium seating until the compliance personnel inquired about it. By that point there was only about a minute left in the competition.”
The former Wolverines quarterback was hired in late December after four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.
