Missing Washington College student who prompted school closure found dead

CHESTERTOWN, Md., Nov. 24 (UPI) — A Washington College student who posed an alleged threat to the college after possibly taking a weapon from his parent’s home was found dead from an apparent suicide.

Jacob Marberger, 19, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot Saturday at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, a bird sanctuary in Kempton, Pa., police said. A green Land Rover he was thought to be driving was also found at the park, located about 70 miles from his home.

“It is with great sorrow that we inform the Washington College community of the passing of sophomore Jacob Marberger. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Marberger family in their time of unimaginable grief,” the college said on its website.”This is a terrible blow to our community, and the outpouring of compassion and support we have shown each other will help us through this difficult time. We need to continue to be supportive of each other as we mourn individually and as a community.”

Marberger, a sophomore at the small liberal arts college, was accused of showing an antique weapon at a party, setting off a cascade of events that led to a two-week suspension, being kicked out of his fraternity and resigning from the school senate. He was facing expulsion and possible criminal charges. It is illegal for anyone under age 21 in Maryland to possess a handgun.

He served his suspension at his parent’s house and at one point left with a rifle case. His parents were unsure if there was a weapon in the case, but the school was put on lockdown and eventually the campus was closed. The school will remain closed until Nov. 30.

Marberger was seen as a leader on campus, so much so he was chosen as part of the search committee when the school was looking for a new president. Some have suggested Marberger was bullied on social media because of his involvement on campus.
