HOLLYWOOD, July 31 (UPI) — Tom Cruise’s latest Mission: Impossible flick raked in a whopping $4 million in theaters Thursday before expanding to over 3,000 locations.
The revenue from Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation’s first evening showings is comparable to that of another summer hit, Mad Max — which made $3.7 million. Paramount reports comparisons to other box-office hits like World War Z ($3.6 million) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($4.1 million).
Shot in Austria, Morocco and the U.K., the action-packed film, and fifth Mission: Impossible installment, is expected to reach a $40 million opening weekend.
According to Box Office Mojo, the well-reviewed film is predicted to exceed $40 million by the end of the weekend, hitting $48.7 million instead.
Rogue Nation follows Ethan Hunt (Cruise) as he works to disband an international organization focused on creating a new world order through terrorist attacks and assassinations. Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the flick also stars Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Feruson.
