JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A big green straw could determine whether Republicans will hold a supermajority in the Mississippi House.
One election ended in a tie Nov. 3, and state law says the tie is broken by a drawing of lots.
So, on Friday, 20-year Democratic incumbent Bo Eaton and his Republican challenger, Mark Tullos, will meet in the governor’s office. Each will pull a box from a bag, and the candidate whose box contains a long green straw will win.
Eaton says he will accept the result. Tullos says he will accept it if he wins — but if he loses, he intends to ask the House to seat him as the winner in January because he questions whether votes were counted fairly. A Tullos victory would give the GOP a three-fifths majority.
