Modi meets defense chiefs aboard aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya

KOCHI , India, Dec. 15 (UPI) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the country’s annual defense summit Tuesday aboard the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.

The ship, 31 miles off the coast of southwestern India’s port city of Kochi, was chosen as the site for the Combined Commanders Conference because Modi suggested last year the event should take place aboard ships or at air bases instead of annually in New Delhi.

This is the first time the conference has been held outside the capital.

Modi spoke and was briefed about military issues during the 3 1/2-hour meeting. Among those present were Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar, Defense Secretary G. Mohan Kumar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Army Chief General Dalbir Singh, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R. K. Dhowan and Chief of Air Staff Marshal Arup Raha.
