‘Muppets’ showrunner Bob Kushell leaves revival

NEW YORK, Nov. 5 (UPI) — Bob Kushell, showrunner and co-creator of ABC’s revival of The Muppets, has left the series during its freshman season.

The move comes amid reports Kushell and executive producer Bill Prady — who spends most of his week working on Big Bang Theory — could not agree on the creative direction of the new series, Hollywood Reporter said. Prady’s part-time work on the show left most of the pressure on Kushell, reports say, causing tension and stress behind the scenes.

Galavant’s Kristin Newman is being eyed as Kushell’s replacement as the show moves forward, though no final agreements have been made. If hired, the co-executive producer of How I Met Your Mother will work alongside Prady, Randall Einhorn, Bill Barretta, Debbie McClellan and Kyle Laughlin to helm Muppets.

The Muppets, ABC’s new faux-reality comedy following the behind-the-scenes events of Miss Piggy’s late night talk show, has been doing an average job in terms of ratings since its September debut. Deadline reported despite its familiar name and characters, the show’s ratings almost match that of Eddie Huang’s sitcom Fresh Off The Boat.

“Because of its marquee title, The Muppets has been held to a different standard,” the outlet asserts, “so its performance has been considered somewhat disappointing, and there has been a concern about its creative direction.”
