An undersea earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale has jolted Taiwan, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The central weather bureau said the tremor struck at 18:59 pm (1059 GMT) with its epicenter located 62 kilometers (38 miles) east of Chengkung in southeastern Taitung county. It occurred at a depth of 5 kilometers.
Taiwan, which lies near the junction of two tectonic plates, is regularly shaken by earthquakes.
A powerful quake last month sparked telecoms chaos across Asia, cutting undersea cables critical for Internet and telephone connections in the region.
Two people were also killed and at least 42 injured in December's 7.1-magnitude quake in the island's south.
A 7.6-magnitude quake killed about 2,400 people in Taiwan in September 1999.
