SAN FRANCISCO, July 23 (UPI) — Some 150 homes were evacuated after a wind-whipped wildfire in northern California, possibly sparked by a car crash, raced through more than 6,000 acres and destroyed one building.
Hundreds of firefighters worked overnight Thursday to contain fire by air and land near Napa Valley’s Lake Berryessa. By early Thursday, it was just 5 percent contained, threatening about 200 structures. Firefighters said strong winds were driving the blaze that possibly started as a result of a Wednesday afternoon traffic crash.
Firefighters used DC10 jets to dump thousands of gallons of flame retardant on the blaze, dubbed the Wragg Fire. There are also 15 trucks, 11 bulldozers and five water tenders trying to slow the fire from progressing.
Many area residents spent the night at Red Cross shelters after two communities and two campgrounds were evacuated. There are no reported injuries.
