WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 (UPI) — Did scientists find direct evidence of life on Mars? Does Mars host a hidden ocean?
Right now, all anyone officially knows is what NASA announced on social media and in a press release over the weekend: big news is coming.
On Twitter, NASA declared a “major scientific finding had been made” and “Mars mystery solved.”
On Friday, the space agency scheduled a press conference for Monday morning, 11:30 a.m. EST, promising further details on the apparently solved Mars mystery.
“NASA will detail a major science finding from the agency’s ongoing exploration of Mars during a news briefing,” officials wrote in a press release.
There is plenty of speculation on what exactly will be revealed, but most in the science community believe the announcement will detail the discovery of free flowing water on Mars.
The scientists scheduled to address reporters at the press conference — Michael Meyer, Lujendra Ojha, Mary Beth Wilhelm and Alfred McEwen — have all previously worked on the search for water on Mars.
There has been plenty of indirect evidence of water’s past presence on Mars, but proof of free-flowing water would change the discussion about life on Mars, making the presence of living organisms more than likely. It would also embolden those working to establish some sort of human colony or outpost on the Red Planet.
NASA’s big announcement will be streamed live on NASA TV.
