Natalia Lafourcade begins Latin Grammys with 3 wins

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The biggest night in Latin music began Thursday with alternative rhythms, mariachi music and three prizes for Mexican singer Natalia Lafourcade for her acclaimed album, “Hasta la Raiz.”

Lafourcade won the first award of the night, record of the year, after claiming two trophies during the pre-telecast ceremony, where the bulk of the awards are presented.

“I’m very emotional. My heart could burst,” she said as she received her award at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. She also kissed her friend and collaborator, Leonel Garcia, with whom she shares three nominations for the album.

“This has taught me that whatever hurts us can be transformed into beautiful moments, shared with friends,” Lafourcade said.

Mana won the pop/rock album award for “Cama Incendiada.” As the group claimed their prize, singer Fher urged Hispanics living in the United States to get out the vote.

“This is how we can use our power,” he said. “We have to exercise our right to vote, and vote for those who will give more quality to Latinos, to the candidates. Use your strength, Latinos!”

The ceremony began with J Balvin performing a medley of “Ginza” and “Lean On” with Farruko and Major & Mo, backed by dancers in colorful folkloric costumes.

Lafourcade and Garcia are responsible for the most nominated album of the year, with five bids for her and three for him. Garcia received three other nods for his own work, making him the night’s top nominee.

Other multiple nominees include Juan Luis Guerra and Alejandro Sanz, with four bids each; Crooner Pablo Alborán, Miguel Bosé, Café Quijano, Pedro Capó, Nicky Jam and Ricky Martin have three bids apiece. Actresses Jacqueline Bracamontes and Roselyn Sanchez are hosting the show.

The Latin Grammys are being broadcast in the United States by Univision. For the first time, the telecast will also reach viewers in China.
