NEW YORK, Dec. 15 (UPI) — NBC continues to show interest in rebooting fan-favorite fantasy show Xena: Warrior Princess by hiring Lost alum Javier Grillo-Marxuach to write and executive produce the new show.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Grillo-Marxuach will be joining Xena co-creators Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi will helm the reboot under their Ghost House Pictures label.
The publication also notes that original star Lucy Lawless, who is married to Tapert, is not currently involved in the reboot as the network is looking for a newer, more modern take on the character.
Lawless showed support for a new series July at Comic-Con when the reboot first entered into its early stages of development. When asked what’s taken so long for Xena to return, the actress mentioned “It’s about who’s got the rights,” and added “But that’s a piss poor excuse anymore. I think they just…find who’s got the rights. Freakin’ pay it. It’s better to have 80 percent of something than 100 percent of nothing.”
“Don’t waste this opportunity. Reinvigorate that franchise,” she continued. “They’re fools not to bring it back.”
In August, NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said he’d “love for it to happen.
Xena: Warrior Princess originally aired for six seasons and 134 episodes from 1995 through 2001.
