NBC to stream Superbowl XLIX online for free

GLENDALE, Calif., Jan. 20 (UPI) — Cable subscribers around the country will be able to stream Super Bowl XLIX for free on their tablets or desktops as NBCUniversal will use the NFL’s championship game to showcase its “TV Everywhere” partnerships with regional cable providers such as Comcast and Time Warner.

Viewers with cable packages featuring online video on demand services will be able to access “Super Streaming Sunday” through their cable providers VOD portal, or by visiting the NFL’s official website and SuperBowl.com.

“We are leveraging the massive digital reach of the Super Bowl to help raise overall awareness of TV by allowing consumers to explore our vast TVE offering with this special one-day-only access,” Alison Moore, general manager and executive vice president of TV Everywhere for NBCU, said in a statement.

The live stream will begin with pregame coverage at noon on Feb. 1 and continue for at least 11 hours through the episode of NBC’s espionage drama The Blacklist, scheduled to air after the game. Unlike typical online VOD and live-streaming services, NBC will not require users to register and sign in to TV Everywhere or their cable company’s equivalent service, as NBC says it will only request that information after Sunday’s episode of The Blacklist concludes.

The streaming broadcast will feature specifically tailored advertisements for the online audience, as well as simulcasts of the national advertising campaigns. Mobile customers will not be able to access the game through TV Everywhere, as Verizon owns the NFL’s exclusive mobile broadcasting rights and will be offering the game to mobile users through the NFL Now App.

Football fans outside the United States can pay $9.99 to watch the game online through NFL Game Pass.
