New York Mets shutdown Wright after diagnosis

NEW YORK, May 24 (UPI) — You may have to wait some time to see {link:David Wright: “http://www.upi.com/News_Photos/view/1ba38023b40129dc221be1d77abc0f28/?ilink=1″,nw, t: “Opening Day at Citi Field”}’s trademark smile gleaming from the hot-corner.

Wright was diagnosed with spinal stenosis Saturday, according to {link:Anthony DiComo of MLB.com: “https://twitter.com/AnthonyDiComo/status/602186730175860736″,nw, t: “DiComo on Wright injury”}.

Wright, 32, has played in just eight games this season. He went on the disabled list on April 15 following a hamstring injury before feeling stiffness in his banged-up back.

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal column. The Mets have decided to sit Wright for a week, according to multiple sources.

He is hitting .333 with one home run and four RBI this season.

“They thought at this point he should be pain-free for the most part,” Mets assistant GM John Ricco {link:told Fox Sports: “http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/new-york-mets-david-wright-diagnosed-with-spinal-issue-shut-down-for-at-least-a-week-052315?adbsc=social_20150523_46350046&adbid=10153911819594552&adbpl=fb&adbpr=112638779551″,nw, t: “Fox Sports on Wright”}. “He’s not, so this is the way they recommended to try to strengthen the core and hopefully stabilize the back.”

Former Mets great Len Dykstra had {link:the same condition: “https://twitter.com/BobKlap/status/602197685689556993″,nw, t: “Dykstra retirement”} and was forced to retire at 35, while New York Giants running back David Wilson {link:retired last year: “http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/06/sports/football/david-wilsons-retirement-from-nfl-raises-injury-awareness.html?_r=0″,nw, t: “David Wilson in NYT”} at the age of 23.
