NEW YORK, Dec. 22 (UPI) — The National Football League announced its all-star rosters Tuesday night, which feature many of the usual players but may not have included some otherwise deserving prospects.
The NFL revealed the rosters for Team (Jerry) Rice and Team (Michael) Irvin on its network Tuesday evening.
Undefeated Carolina had the most players selected (10) while Arizona, Seattle and New England will each send seven to Hawaii. Six teams — Chicago, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, San Diego and Tennessee — had zero players selected.
Quarterbacks
The Picks: Russell Wilson (SEA), Ben Roethlisberger (PIT), Aaron Rodgers (GB), Cam Newton (CAR), Carson Palmer (ARI) and Tom Brady (NE).
Biggest Snub: Andy Dalton (CIN) was selected to the Pro Bowl last year and was leading the Bengals toward a division title when he fractured the thumb on his throwing hand on Dec. 13.
Running Backs
The Picks: Jonathan Stewart (CAR), Adrian Peterson (MIN), LeSean McCoy (BUF), Todd Gurley (STL), Devonta Freeman (ATL) and Doug Martin (TB).
Biggest Snub: DeAngelo Williams (PIT) has successfully replaced La’Veon Bell to keep the Steelers’ rushing attack afloat.
Wide Receivers
The Picks: Brandon Marshall (NYJ), Julio Jones (ATL), Calvin Johnson (DET), DeAndre Hopkins (HOU), A.J. Green (CIN), Larry Fitzgerald (ARI), Antonio Brown (PIT) and Odell Beckham (NYG).
Biggest Snub: Allen Robinson (JAX) has had a breakout season with the Jaguars, receiving for 1,141 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The Best of the Rest
Several players are making repeat appearances on the Pro Bowl rosters — including Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, Seattle corner Richard Sherman, Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews, Jets defensive back Darrell Revis and Oakland safety Charles Woodson, who announced this week he will retire after the season. Brady will be playing in his seventh straight Pro Bowl.
Snub-wise, numerous players could make a case for inclusion — but were not — such as Miami safety Reshad Jones, Minnesota linebacker Anthony Barr, Bengals punt returner Adam Jones, Green Bay defensive lineman Mike Daniels, Vikings defensive tackle Linval Joseph, Dallas linebacker Sean Lee, Kansas City linebacker Derrick Johnson, Minnesota defensive back Harrison Smith and Buffalo corner Ronald Darby.
The players selected for the Pro Bowl will be placed on either Team Rice or Team Irvin a few weeks before the game.
The NFL Pro Bowl will be held in Honolulu on Jan. 31 and will be broadcast live by ESPN.
