Indianapolis (AFP) – The Indianapolis Colts fired general manager Ryan Grigson on Saturday after the team missed the NFL playoffs for the second consecutive season, Colts owner Jim Irsay announced Saturday.

Irsay also said that Chuck Pagano would remain as the Colts’ head coach in 2017.

“I will say that this timing was right for us,” Irsay said. “We needed the time to go through the process.

“Internally, we worked through some things even through this week that gave us some direction on our final decision and I’m very excited about the direction we’re going.”

The Colts went 8-8 this season, finishing third in the AFC South division and missing the post-season again.

Grigson, who was in his first general manager role, had overseen the Colts for the past five seasons.

The Colts signed Pagano to a four-year contract extension a year ago. He has a 49-31 record in five seasons with Indianapolis.

After the Colts’ final regular-season game, Pagano said he expected to be back in 2017.

“That’s the plan,” Pagano said. “I don’t have any reason to believe why I wouldn’t be (back).”
