Nicki Minaj recites Maya Angelou during A&E benefit concert

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 20 (UPI) — Nicki Minaj offered her own passionate rendition of Maya Angelou’s 1978 poem Still I Rise during A&E’s Shining A Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America event.

The special set to air Friday, will address the ongoing racial conflicts present around the United States and raise money for United Way Worldwide, an organization aimed at building educational facilities around the world.

“You may write me down in history/ With your bitter, twisted lies/ You may trod me in the very dirt/ But still, like dust, I’ll rise,” Nicki stated to a cheering crowd Thursday during the concert’s taping.

The show will also feature performances from John Legend, Miguel, Tori Kelly, and Pharrell Williams just to name a few.

“Any solutions have to begin with dialogue, and we want to help get that dialogue going,” said Williams during the event according to the Los Angeles Times.

Shining A Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America premieres Friday at 8 p.m. on A&E.
