Nicki Minaj says she handpicked cast in comedy based on her life

BURBANK, Calif., Dec. 19 (UPI) — Get Hard and Fruitvale Station actress Ariana Neal is to play a younger version of Nicki Minaj in Nicki, a new comedy series based on the music superstar’s life, ABC Family announced.

Minaj is executive producing and will appear on the show, which will feature Whoopi Goldberg as the neighbor of Minaj’s family.

The ensemble will also include Selita Ebanks as Minaj’s mother, Wesley Jonathan as her father and McCarrie McCausland as her brother.

“I am honored and excited to announce that I’ve literally hand picked the main characters of my scripted series “Nicki” ~ #ABCFamily #Freeform ~ I’ve been going to the auditions falling in love with some incredible people. Looking forward to unveiling this groundbreaking new show for you guys in 2016!” Minaj posted on Instagram Friday.

Cable television network ABC Family will be rebranded as Freeform on Jan. 12.
