NEW YORK, Sept. 29 (UPI) — ABC Family has ordered a new comedy series focused around rapper Nicki Minaj’s upbringing after she and her family moved to the United States from Trinidad.
The half-hour scripted series will reportedly begin shooting in New York in the winter and revolve around a young Minaj — or Onika Tanya Maraj — as she grows up with her family in Queens, New York during the 1990s. The “Trini Dem Girls” singer is slated to appear in the show, but her role is not yet clear.
“This is one of the more unique adventures I’ve ever embarked on,” the hip-hop artist said in a statement released by ABC Family. “I couldn’t be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.”
Will and Grace writer Kate Angelo has written the pilot for the new series and will executive produce alongside Minaj.
The rapper reportedly studied acting in high school and pursued a career in the industry before moving to music.
She has appeared as a voice actress in Ice Age: Continental Drift and co-starred in The Other Woman. She will appear in MGM’s Barbershop 3 and has made appearances on Saturday Night Live as both a musical and on-screen guest.
