NEW YORK, Oct. 22 (UPI) — The memorable pair of self-lacing Nikes that Marty McFly wore in Back to the Future II have become a reality.
Nike revealed the futuristic Mag shoes Wednesday by sending the first pair to McFly himself, Michael J. Fox.
In a short video released online, Fox tries on the sneakers while using buttons located on the back of the heel to tighten or loosen the laces. “That’s insane…it’s really great,” the actor is heard saying.
“This innovation advances what was coined the Nike Mag’s ‘power laces,’ combining the archetype invention with digital technology,” Nike said in a statement. “The result is an individually responsive system that senses the wearer’s motion to provide adaptive on-demand comfort and support.”
Nike president and CEO Mark Parker, added: “We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes. By imagining the future, we create it. Product that comes alive, with on-demand comfort and support when you need, product that senses you and adapts to you is right around the corner.”
Fox also demonstrated the Mags on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday as part of the ongoing pop culture celebration that was Back to the Future day after calendars reached the exact date that McFly traveled to in Back to the Future II.
This isn’t the first time Nike has attempted to create the Mag. In 2011, the company released and sold 1,500 pairs of the shoe, minus the power laces, to raise money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which helps fight Parkinson’s disease.
A similar deal will be offered in spring 2016 in a limited run via auction.
“We hope that the combined effort will raise even more than the $9.4 million collected in 2011 and contribute in some way to eliminating Parkinson’s disease in our lifetime,” said Nike’s Tinker Hatfield, who originally designed the shoes for the 1989 film.
