OSLO, Norway, Aug. 18 (UPI) — A co-pilot of a commercial plane, who had a blood alcohol level seven times the legal limit before a flight, was jailed in Norway.
The unidentified Latvian man, 38, failed a breathalyzer test Aug. 8 before his airBaltic flight from Oslo, Norway, to the Greek island of Crete, with 100 passengers aboard, was to have taken off. He received a six-month sentence Monday after admitting in court he drank beer and two bottles of whiskey prior to the flight.
The initial sentence of eight months’ imprisonment was reduced to six months after his admission of guilt. Two flight attendants received jail terms of 45 and 60 days, respectively, for the same offence, and the plane’s pilot remains in custody, awaiting a Sept. 17 trial.
The crew received breathalyzer tests after an anonymous tip to Norwegian police was received.
The Latvian national airline airBaltic said in a statement it would introduced additional safety measures, including pre-flight alcohol checks, adding the four people arrested have been suspended from duty.
