Norwegians try to gift Finland a mountain by moving borders

ENONTEKIö, Norway, Dec. 18 (UPI) — Norwegians have taken to Facebook to start a campaign to adjust the country’s borders in order to give Finland a mountain peak as an anniversary gift.

The campaign, entitled “Halti as an anniversary gift”, would move the border between Norway and Finland about 66 feet to the left, placing the peak of the Halti mountains in Finland.

“The aim of the site is to see how many Norwegians are interested in giving Finland the peak of Halti mountain which is 20 meters within our borders as an anniversary gift in 2017,” the page, created by retired Norwegian Mapping Authority employee Bjørn Geirr’s son read.

Harsson,75, came up with the idea while flying over the border in 1972 and told The Telegraph that while the change in geography is small, the gesture is a significant one.

“It would not change the square kilometer size of Norway or Finland,” he said. “But it would make a big difference that the highest point in Finland would be on a mountain peak and not on a hillside.”

The movement has gained support with the Facebook page receiving over 5,000 likes and an endorsement from Norwegian Mapping Authority Head Anne Cathrine Frøstrup.

It’s a very good idea,” she told Norwegian news outlet NRK. “It is a nice gift to give to a country that lacks a high mountain, where the highest point isn’t even a peak.”
