NTSB releases images, video of sunken El Faro cargo ship

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Jan. 4 (UPI) — The National Transportation Safety Board has released images and video of the final resting place of the El Faro cargo ship, the sinking of which remains under investigation.

El Faro was owned by Sea Star Line, LLC and operated by TOTE Maritine Services. The ship went missing near the Bahamas on Oct. 1 during the Category 4 Hurricane Joaquin with 28 Americans and five Polish nationals aboard. All crew members are presumed dead.

The ship was found about 15,000 feet below water near the vicinity of its last known location near Crooked Island, Bahamas, the NTSB said in a statement. The ship was sent from Jacksonville, Fla., toward Puerto Rico.

TOTE filed a lawsuit in November in an attempt to block families of the boat’s victims from seeking legal action against the company.
