Nursing want ad demanding “no Haitians” draws fire

WEST HAVERSTRAW, N.Y., Oct. 19 (UPI) — An employment want-ad in a Rockland County, N.Y., newspaper, specifying no Haitians need apply, has drawn anger and criticism.

The ad, placed by Florida-based Interim Healthcare Inc. in the West Haverstraw, N.Y., Pennysaver for a female nursing position, seeks a “laid back nurse, no haitians.”

“I am outraged at this blatant form of employment discrimination. This company should be ashamed of itself, and Pennysaver should strongly reconsider running any job postings from Interim Healthcare in future publications,” commented state Sen. David Carlucci, D-N.Y., whose 38th District includes West Haverstraw.

Berthilde Durfrene, founder of Haitian American Nurses Association of Rockland County, commented, “Why the Haitian nurses? And I started to think what could possibly trigger such a mean and disgusting thing from anyone.” Carlucci and Durfrene each posted a photo of the advertisement on their Twitter sites; Durfrene said she has received support from Haitian-born nurses across the United States, and Carlucci promised letters to government agencies demanding an investigation.

Interim Health Care Inc. offered no comment.

Among the 182,000 Haitian-born female workers age 16 and older employed in the U.S. civilian labor force in 2008, 27.2 percent reported working in healthcare support occupations, the American Community Survey reported..
