NYC police: Notorious subway joy-rider steals NJ bus

NEW YORK (AP) — Police say a man with a long history of pretending to be a transit worker and commandeering New York City subway trains for joy rides has been arrested after stealing a commercial passenger bus from New Jersey.

The New York Police Department says Darius McCollum was arrested Wednesday by officers who spotted the bus traveling down a street in Brooklyn.

McCollum has about two dozen transit-related arrests, starting in 1981, when he drove the E train to the World Trade Center at the age of 15. In 2008, he was arrested for stealing a Trailways bus from Hoboken, New Jersey.

McCollum is being held at a police station in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn. There was no immediate response to a message left Wednesday with his lawyer from previous cases.

This story has been corrected to show that McCollum was arrested on Wednesday, not Tuesday.
