NYPD officer shot in the head; killed in gun battle

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police say the gunman suspected of killing an officer is in custody with a gunshot wound, and three others have been taken in for questioning.

Officer Randolph Holder was killed late Tuesday night after he chased a gunman along a pedestrian bridge in East Harlem. He was struck in the head. Police Commissioner Bratton says Holder is the fourth officer to die in the line of duty in the last 11 months.

A law enforcement official says at least one gun was recovered and shell casings from possibly three weapons were discovered at the scene. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss an ongoing probe and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Holder was 33 and had been an officer for about five years.
