WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says it’s “no secret” that the security situation in the Mideast has deteriorated, and that he wants to work with Israel to “get back on a path towards peace.”
Obama is meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (neh-ten-YAH’-hoo) in the Oval Office. It’s their first face-to-face meeting in more than a year.
Their meeting comes as the U.S. and Israel work to move past tensions over the U.S.-backed nuclear deal with Iran.
In remarks before the meeting, Obama acknowledged the tensions over that “narrow issue.” He says he wants to hear Netanyahu’s thoughts on how to lower tensions in the region.
