Obama tries to put human face on Syrian refugee debate

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — President Barack Obama crouched alongside migrant children in Malaysia and declared they are unlike the terrorists wreaking havoc worldwide.

He sought to put a human face on the world’s refugee crisis by saying the children are “just like our kids.”

More than mere musings, Obama’s comments were meant as a direct rebuke to those demanding a halt to Syrian and Iraqi refugees entering the U.S. following the Islamic State’s deadly attacks in Paris.

Obama says the U.S. has shown it can welcome refugees while ensuring the homeland is secure.

Many Americans seem to disagree. Recent surveys show public sentiment running against admitting Syrian refugees out of concern that terrorists could exploit the program. And Republican lawmakers in the House, aided by scores of Democrats, voted against Obama this week.
