Obama welcomes Abe to White House with high ceremony

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is welcoming Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with full pomp and ceremony under brilliant skies on a dewy morning at the White House.

Military honors and a gun salute greeted the Japanese leader who is in Washington for a state visit. Trade and security issues top the agenda for his meeting with Obama Tuesday. The day will be capped by a state dinner with about 300 guests.

The visit aims to highlight the reconciliation between two nations once at war and to showcase the alliance both have built over time.

The two leaders will huddle in the Oval Office and also hold a joint news conference.
