Obama would veto sanctuary city funding cutoff bill

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 (UPI) — The White House said Tuesday a Senate bill cutting off federal funding to “sanctuary cities” uncooperative in illegal immigration crackdowns would be vetoed.

The Republican-dominated Senate is expected to vote on the bill, S. 2146, Tuesday. The threat of a veto comes as President Barack Obama and Republican lawmakers continue offering conflicting visions of reforming the United States’ immigration policy.

A statement by the Office of Management and Budget Tuesday noted, “This bill fails to offer comprehensive reforms needed to fix the Nation’s broken immigration laws and undermines current Administration efforts to remove the most dangerous convicted criminals and to work collaboratively with State and local law enforcement agencies.” It also suggested a removal of federal funding to affected cities “would lead to mistrust between communities and State and local law enforcement.”

While there is no legal definition of a sanctuary city, about 200 municipalities across the United States have policies in place to refrain from prosecuting illegal aliens. The issue gained attention in July, when an illegal alien, who had been deported five times, was accused of a murder in San Francisco, a city with sanctuary status.
