Obama’s trip to Asia light on tourism

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House has gone to great lengths to show President Barack Obama isn’t a lame duck. It’s less worried about showing he is not a lame tourist.

Obama is heading overseas Saturday for a trip focused on diplomacy in Turkey, the Philippines and Malaysia. His schedule shows little room for light sightseeing or so-called cultural stops typical of presidential travel. Obama will participate in at least eight bilateral meetings with foreign leaders and four summits.

Obama found time to walk barefoot up the steps of the Shwedagon Pagoda during a six-hour stop in Myanmar in 2012. He diverted his departure from a NATO summit last year to visit Stonehenge. And he capped a 2013 trip to the Mideast by visiting the ancient city of Petra.
