BEIJING (AP) — A city government in southern China has revoked approval of a planned waste incinerator in response to public opposition and protests by residents.
It is the latest of several cases of local authorities bowing to a public outcry over health concerns.
Luoding city government in Guangdong province said in a statement Wednesday that the project fit a national policy to encourage solid waste processing in the cement industry, but that the city cancelled it in response to public demands.
The Communist Party-affiliated Global Times newspaper reported Thursday that thousands of residents fearful of pollution began a protest Monday against the incinerator. The newspaper says the protest ended Tuesday after clashes between protesters and police.
